Windin Falls – Best Infinity Pool in Australia?
Windin Falls is a beautiful waterfall with an incredible infinity pool to relax in at the top of the waterfall. It will make for a perfect way to spend a warm sunny day. Even with clouds, you will enjoy yourself. Just try to avoid the falls after heavy rain as you may not be able to go into the infinity pool for safety reasons.
Getting to Windin Falls is actually pretty easy. From Cairns, you travel south along Bruce Highway to Gilles Ridge Road. After some time going through the curvy road, you will take a left onto Lake Barrine Road. One more left turn onto Topaz Road, and then it is a straight shot to the trail for Windin Falls. The drive should take you around 1.5 hours from Cairns to the trailhead.
There are two trails for Windin Falls

You have two options for hiking to the falls. On Topaz Road, there is a sign that points to the right for Windin Falls. You can take this route, and it will take you to a pretty easy hiking trail. The other option is to go straight at this sign instead of turning right. You will come to a fence that you have to climb over for the trail. Google Maps actually takes you to this spot, and it is a slightly shorter hike to the falls. I took the route with the signs, so that is what I will talk about below.

Following the sign that sends you to the right will lead you to a small carpark. Depending on the day, it can be quite busy here, so find a place however you need to. From the carpark, you will begin to walk along an extremely easy trail. The trail is about five kilometers before you get to Windin Falls. The first 3-4 kilometers is mostly flat. The final kilometer will provide for a little more workout but is still easy enough.

The hardest part of the trail is the last 500 meters

The end of the trail is where rain can be a big problem. The trail is very steep down to Windin Falls and can become quite muddy and slippery in the rain. We made it down the path quickly enough while it was dry. After about ten minutes of enjoying the falls, a storm rolled in, producing a lot of rain. We stayed a little bit longer, hoping it would let up, but we were not so lucky. At least we were able to take a few pictures before the rain started.

The views at Windin Falls are incredible!

The views at Windin Falls are spectacular, and you could easily spend hours in the pool enjoying nature. We would have loved to stay longer, but the rain made that complicated. Once we realized the storm was not likely to let up as soon as we hoped, we decided to pack up and carefully climb up the trail. About one kilometer from the falls, there was no sign it had even rained at all. The path was dry as can be, so the rest of the walk was easy.
Some people have taken some drone videos from Windin Falls and they turn out amazing. Here is one video I found on YouTube. This video was created by RedAdventuresFNQ.
Our entire day took about 7 hours, half of which was driving time. We took about one hour each way walking the trail to and from Windin Falls and probably about one hour around the falls. The trip was worth the effort, despite the rain at the falls. If you are planning to spend a little bit of time in Cairns and have the means to use a car, then I highly recommend making the trip out to this waterfall!
