What happens when you quit your 9-5 job for…
Do you know what it is like to leap into the unknown? For most people, it takes a lot of courage to do anything related to the unknown. It can be a terrifying thing to do, but it can also have some fantastic results. The most significant leap I usually hear about people taking in the travel industry is when they quit there 9-5 job to travel full time. Let’s use an example of a one-year work and holiday visa for Australia.
People will make you question yourself
Deciding to travel full time is daunting. One day you have a steady income, and then the next day, you have zero income. People will tell you that you are crazy to want to quit your job for travel. They have lived their life believing that you have to work every day and can only take the occasional vacation. They think the way they live is the only way you can live life too.
The rewards when you leap into the unknown to travel are unexpected, and you could never plan for them. In the beginning, you will have nothing but questions from others and yourself. Where will you stay? How will you afford everything? What should you see? Who will you meet? The questions are endless, and if you dwell on them, you will have a hard time. When you stop worrying about these things, everything seems to fall into place.
Leap into the unknown in Australia

When you make the trip to Australia, you will probably have nothing more than a flight. You will maybe also have some accommodation booked for your first few days. Most likely you will stay in a hostel because the hotels are too expensive to live in for a year. You land in Australia and figure out a way to get to your hostel, usually with an uber or local transport. Once you make it to your hostel, you quickly learn how easy it is to meet people. All of the people you meet are making your decision to quit your job seem much more natural.
You still have no set plans. The only things you have in mind to see are the major sights such as The Great Barrier Reef and Uluru. You begin to realize that everyone travels along the Australia east coast and that maybe you should do that as well. Every day you are making a new leap into the unknown since you realize you have no idea what you are doing. You will end up making some travel plans with the people you meet. Some of them will turn into lifelong friends.
You will need to make or save some money.
At some point during your time in Australia, you will realize that you need to find a way to make some money, or at the very least save some money. Luckily for you, you have a visa that allows you to legally work for any company that is willing to hire you. You will quickly learn that most of the companies that are willing to hire only include bars and farms. While you look for a job, you will learn about the hostels that have work for accommodation so that you can save money. These positions may also lead to making some money under the table if you work well for the hostel.
You will learn a big lesson once you come to the end of your year in Australia. Now you know that traveling long term is not so hard. You will realize that it does take work and can be challenging at times but is well worth the effort. You will now know that the leaps into the unknown are the way to live an exciting life. Your hardest decision now is going to be leaping back into the 9-5 work-life or sticking to the unknowns of travel life.
